Poliomyelitis (known as polio) is a disabling and life threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. Many people who become infected do not show symptoms but 1 out of 4 infected people will show flu-like symptoms (sore throat, fever, etc.). These symptoms last from 2 to 5 days and usually will go away on their own.
