Poliomyelitis (known as polio) is a disabling and life threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. Many people who become infected do not show symptoms or will show flu-like symptoms (sore throat, fever, etc.). However a small portion of infected people with develop more serious symptoms that affect the brain and spinal cord causing paralysis (can’t move parts of the body).
