Escherichia coli (abbreviated as E. coli) are bacteria naturally found in the environment, foods, and intestines of humans and animals. Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, such as E. coli O157:H7 and Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). E. coli can cause diarrheal illness through contaminated water, food or through contact with an infected animal or human.
