Avian influenza A (bird flu) is a contagious viral disease that widely affects wild and domestic birds that can also infect mammals, including people. There are several viral subtypes of bird flu, and the subtypes that cause the majority of avian influenza infections reported in people are A(H5N1) and A(H7N9). The “A” means type A of influenza virus and the H and N refer to different structures on the surface of the virus. Avian influenza infections can vary in severity in animals and humans, from asymptomatic infection with no noticeable symptoms, to severe disease and death.
