Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (VRSA) is an infection that is caused by the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterial infection commonly occurs in people who are in a healthcare setting (such as a hospital), those with weaker immune system, and those who have been taking vancomycin for a long period of time. The bacteria in VRSA is not responsive to the antibiotic vancomycin. This infection can spread by touching a contaminated surface or through close physical contact. This infection may cause mild symptoms or lead to bloodstream infections, pneumonia, or bone and heart infections.
