Toxic shock syndrome is a rare infection that can be life-threatening. Toxic shock syndrome can be caused by staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria or group A streptococcus (strep) bacteria. Toxic shock syndrome can occur from skin wounds (cuts or burns), recent surgeries, or improper use of tampons.
