The bacteria called Shigella causes the shigellosis infection. This infection causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Shigella spreads very easily and anyone can become infected by swallowing the bacteria (contaminated food, touching contaminated surfaces, or exposure to contaminated stool (poop)). A child with the diagnosis of shigellosis infection should stay home from school and any child care.
