Pertussis (also known as whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that easily spreads from person to person though the air. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they release small bacteria in the air that other people can breathe in. Whooping cough can cause illness in people of all ages but it is most dangerous for babies.
