Mumps is a contagious disease (easily spreads to others) that is caused by a virus. It spreads to people through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets (sneezing, coughing or talking). Mumps is best known for causing puffy cheeks and tender, swollen jaw. Vaccines are recommended to prevent disease.
