Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a serious disease that affects the kidneys and blood clotting system. It usually occurs after a person has had a diarrheal illness caused by certain strains of E. coli bacteria. Children under the age of 5 and adults 65 years or older are at a high risk of developing HUS.
