Giardiasis is a diarrheal disease caused by a tiny parasite. A person or animal can become infected and pass the parasite in their stool (poop). Giardia spreads very easily and humans or animals can become infected if the parasite is swallowed such as consuming contaminated water or food, or having close contact with someone who has giardiasis.
